Never a dull moment, they say. Only sharp ones, then?
Only the ones that make a whole room sparkle when the light hits just right. The ones that leave little glittering shards everywhere and stick to everything they touch and make people either love or hate them. The ones that reflect and flash, or the ones that make a sudden sound that breaks your heart into a million pieces, then puts it back together again.
Only the sharp ones, the ones that leave marks, that can’t be felt till they’re in deep. Ones you don’t notice till it’s too late. The betrayals and sudden shifts of the earth underneath your feet, when you thought you were on solid ground. The ones that cut your heart into pieces and leave it there, bleeding on the ground. The ones that can cause entire shifts of personality, or entire changes of how you live a part of your life in an instant.
Thankfully though, no, that’s not what the saying means. And, it’s not so binary. Not all moments are one or the other. Some start bright and sharp, but time wears them away like sea glass till they soften and glow, placed shimmering on an infinite string. Some start deceptively softly, only to grow and envelop other moments around them over time. Some simply change shape.
Sometimes all you want is a dull moment, but all you get are the frenzied ones that result in exhausted or sarcastic proclamations. But in the end, all moments teach, or mark, or otherwise shape us. It’s up to us to gain the introspective ability to see them for what they are.
